WOODPECKER LEATHERS

WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT LEATHER?

From our very beginning, when primitive man first hunted animals for food, he discovered something extra special: LEATHER

The Egyptians made sandals, clothes, buckets and bottles from it. The Greeks and Romans made shoes, armor, saddles and harnesses. Now we use it to tie our shoes, hold up our trousers, and control the dog. Standing up against the test of time, leather is as popular now as it ever was, and will certainly be with us for a long time to come.

(Collars to fit all size dogs!)

Woodpecker Leathers was founded by myself, Andrew Wood. At the age of fourteen, I started a Saturday job in a small traditional saddler's shop in Epping, Essex. Jobs were many and varied: stitching new straps to policeman's truncheons, patching boots, making new straps for vintage cars and even crafting leather armor for motion picture stunt men. From this job, I moved to another firm that made dog leads, collars and harnesses. The main work consisted of manufacturing large quantities of hand-stitched leads and collars for our customers. Also, once a year we made a large selection of leads which consisted of a plain trigger hook, slip and training in best bridle leather. Our collars came in five widths and nine different lengths; some were plain and some came with studs, all to be sold at the Cruft's dog show on the trade stand. Being the only saddler there, I also made special one-off stirrup leathers and made to measure collars.

Now I'm a fully experienced saddler of thirty-five years. And since I met my wife Denise, we have begun manufacturing our own leather goods for our own business. For the time being, leads are our main product, but in the weeks to follow we will be adding our other wares, such as men's and woman's belts, horse leathers, book marks, key fobs and the like.
